Collegiate 100 Presents Power 100 Awards

The members of the Collegiate 100 and 100 Collegiate Women presented its Power 100 Awards in style at the Black Tie Scholarship Awards Gala on November 16, 2013 in the Willie A. Tempton Student Center Ballroom at Prairie View A&M University. KPVU's Maurice Perkins (DJ MoPhat) served as host for the gala affair, themed "Knowing the Value of US!"

Honorees of the award included Texas State Representatives Alma Allen and Sylvester Turner, Professors George Brown and Kelvin Kirby and the Women’s Volley Ball and Men’s Indoor Track Teams of Prairie View A&M University.  Mrs. Allen has represented district 121 for the past four years, while Mr. Turner has represented district 139 for the more than fifteen years.  Dr. Brown has served as head of biology department and director pre-medicine for more twenty years, with Dr. Kirby serving as faculty member and director for NASA sponsored research for some fifteen years. Both the Volley Ball and Indoor Track Teams have won the SWAC championship during the past three years.

The gala is a major event for the Collegiate 100 since its re-chartering at the university in March 2011.  The organization was created at Prairie View A&M University in 1993.  Proceeds from the gala will support the organization’s mentoring programs at Arnold Middle School and Navasota Elementary School, scholarships to students and other special programs at the university.

In recent months the Collegiates have sponsored several programs to impact the university community to include the University's Career Festival, Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon distribution, Mentoring the 100 Way with the Freshmen, College Tour for elementary through high school students Boy's to Men mentoring at Arnold Middle School and Voter Registration Drives.  The organization was the recipient of the President’s Cup for Outstanding Student Organization for 2012-13 at PVAMU.

Collegiate 100 Welcomes New Members at Prairie View A&M University

The Collegiate 100 at Prairie View A&M University welcomed forty-eight new members into the fold on November 11 in a special induction ceremony held in the Johnson Phillips All Faith Chapel on the campus.  This year’s ceremony was combined with the 100 Collegiate Women of America to maximize participation and closer relationship among the men and women.

The new members who come from varied backgrounds, cultures and experiences, representing a cross section of the students at the university are:

The Collegiate 100 was founded in 1993 by Frederick V. Roberts Esquire, then Director of Student Activities at Prairie View A&M University. Upon acceptance by the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc. and approval by the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., and the Collegiate 100 became an international organization for college men.  Following a few year hiatus, the Collegiate 100 was rechartered on March 10, 2011 with the induction of 22 members on April 18.

This past year, some of the chapter's activities include participation in the Mentoring the 100 Way project of the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc. twice a month, where members work with 30 kids (8-12th graders), providing information on college life and tutoring Math and Science. The chapter also participated in the In-School Mentoring Program at CyFair’s Arnold Middle School, where they provide pep talks on college and life in general. The Arnold mentees also participated in their first college tour to Prairie View A&M University. Other activities was the continued work with the established Boys2Men Mentoring of freshmen male through various seminars with the men and women residents and supported by the residence halls; seminars on Breast Cancer Awareness with distribution of literature and pink ribbons; and Relay for Life with American Cancer Society. The chapter also teamed up with Highland Heights Elementary in Acres Home for the HISD Real Men Read Program, where the members read to the students once a month.

The Chapter hosted its first Black Tie Scholarship and Power 100 Awards Gala honoring the  SWAC Championship Women’s Basketball and Bowling Teams, Mayors Frank D. Jackson and Michael Wolfe and several students in 2012. The next gala is set for November 16, 2013 at the university to honor and recognize the Texas State Representatives Alma Allen and Sylvester Turner, Dr. George Brown, Dr. Kelvin Kirby and members of the Prairie View A&M University Championship Women’s Volley Ball and the Track Teams.  

Plans are underway to host the 2014 Male Youth Summit in February, the National Black Male Leadership Summit in April, along with the 2014 Mr. Collegiate African American Scholarship Pageant.

Jonathan Amos a senior accounting student is the president for the Collegiate 100 and Charnabria Leonard as senior biology student is the president of the 100 Collegiate Women of America. The chapter advisers are Mrs. Shadia Washington, Dr. Clement Glenn and Frederick V. Robert Esquire.

Amos Takes Helm of Collegiate 100 PVAMU

Jonathan Amos, a senior accounting major at Prairie View A &M University is the new president of the Collegiate 100. Originally elected vice president, Amos ascended to the position with the resignation of Patrick Gray who served as president for 2012-13.  Amos previously served as Treasurer for 2012-13.

To enhance his professional development, Jonathan completed two internships, the first with Spectra Energy Inc., Houston in Summer 2012 and Deloitte & Touche LLP. Houston in Summer 2013. Both internships provided opportunities for him to network and develop his professional and technical skills for his future career as a CPA. 

He also competed in the KPMG Case Study Competition sponsored by J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. with in Phoenix, Arizona in the summer of 2012. He is most proud of the competition because it gave him a chance to present a detailed perspective on diversity of J.P Morgan Chase Board of Directors to the judges.

Jonathan’s membership include, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. (Fundraising and Finance Committee Chair), Accounting Career Awareness Program (Counselor), National Association of Black Accountants (NABA-President), Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society (Vice President), and Volunteers of America. He also is a member of the Intramural Basketball Team and American Cancer Society Relay for Life team.  Amidst his busy schedule, Jonathan finds time to participate in the Collegiate’s mentoring program at Arnold Middle School in Cypress and the Mentoring the 100 Way for the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc.

Some of his awards and recognition include, participant in the Wake Forest Diversity Accounting Consortium, United Ministers Scholarship, J.E.L. Emerging Leaders Scholarship, National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) Regional Scholarship, the University’s Dean’s List and President’s Honor Roll and a participant in the College of Business’s Cultural Exchange Trip to South Korea.

Strong organizational and leadership skills; able to work effectively and efficiently while handling multiple tasks in a high pressure environment.

Upon receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in May 2014 he plans to become a CPA and to become a Partner for Deloitte and Touché. 

The Collegiate 100 is comprised of students on college and university campuses across America who shares common goals with the sponsoring 100 Black Men of America Chapter. Collegiate 100 members are committed to volunteerism and improving the community through mentoring and being positive role models for the youth, particularly young African Americans.   The Collegiate 100 was created at Prairie View A&M University in 1993 and became a national organization of the 100 Black Men, Inc., in 1994. The chapter was re-chartered at the University in March 2011.

PVAMU Collegiate Wins Presidents Cup Award

The Collegiate 100 Chapter of Prairie View A&M University received the university’s highest honor, the President’s Cup, for student organizations at the Student Organization Awards Program on April 30.  The PVAMU Chapter is sponsored by the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc.  The award is given to the student organization for dedicated community service, personal and professional development of its members, accomplishments and academic achievement.

In presenting the award, the committee chair, Mrs. Isis McCraw shared highlights of the organization’s activities for the year to include its outstanding mentoring program for male students at the university, as well as two area middle and high schools.

PVAMU’s Collegiate 100 Chapter President Patrick Gray and Vice President Vincent Ellis accepted the award along with members Jonathan Amos (Treasurer), Timothy Anderson and Ryan Turner (Parliamentarian) and Frederick V. Roberts, the 100 Advisor.

The Collegiate 100 was selected for the award over some 100 eligible organizations at the university.  The award was established at the university in 2004. After three years on the campus, the organization was recognized for its activities in 2012 and to win the award in 2013 is an honor the chapter cherishes.

In addition to sponsoring impacting events, winning the award this year was a major goal established by President Gray for 2012-13 under the moniker of “Keeping it 100™”. That theme permeated every aspect of the chapter in leadership, programming, academics, brotherhood, mentoring, professional development and service to the community.  The national’s “Four for the Future” programs: economic empowerment, health and wellness, education and mentoring provided the foundation for programming and implementing the events for the year.

“We took our tasks very seriously to be involved and to make an impact on the community, not just an impression,” say President Gray.  “We wanted to do things in a big way and to do things not usually perform by student organizations, such as hosting the “Black Tie Scholarship Gala” and establishing the “Power 100 Awards” to honor faculty, staff, students and community leaders.”  Additionally, the chapter ramped up its mentoring program at the Arnold Middle School in Cypress with some 28 male students and at Navasota Elementary with some 32 students.  The members also participated in the bi-weekly Mentoring the 100 Way, sponsored by the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc.

Dr. Clement Glenn, Collegiate Campus Advisor and Frederick V. Roberts, 100 Advisor insists and encourage the young men and women to maintain high standards of excellence for themselves and the organization. Both advisors are involved in the chapters programming and activities and usually conducts seminars on leadership and professional development throughout the year.   “We are very proud of the membership and the superior services they provide to the campus and the communities at large,” say Roberts.  “Patrick has provided exceptional leadership to the chapter and has raised the bar for student sponsored activities with the recognition of the Women’s Basketball and Volley Ball Champions, and honoring the local mayors with the Power 100 Award,” Roberts continued.

Some of the activities sponsored by the chapter in 2012-13 are:

• Provided Christmas Gifts and Funs to the Texas Children Hospital
• Sponsored its Real Men can Cook Program for the ladies of the 100
• Participated in the 100 Black Men of Metro Houston, Inc. Leadership Academy
• Raised Awareness for breast and testicular cancer
• Sponsored a College Tour to PVAMU for the Mentees from Arnold Middle School
• Presented scholarships to Mentees in the Arnold Middle School Mentoring Program
• Presented Check to Navasota Elementary School for programs
• Participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life
• Promoted safe sex and raised awareness about sexually transmitted diseases
• Participated in Highland Heights Elementary school’s Real Men Read Program
• Mentoring Seminars for a select group of freshmen male
• Saluting the Ladies during Women's History Month Celebration

The Collegiate 100 has impacted the students with their career readiness through sponsorship of its Career addressing resumes, interviewing techniques, dress for success and art of networking. The expo was co-sponsored with the Career Services Center at the University in the fall and spring semesters.  The Collegiate 100 believes in leading by example and is one of the few organizations with 100 percent of its members registered with Center.  In fall 2012, the chapter co-hosted Mr. George Olukun "Mr. Opportunity” of Atlanta as the keynote speaker for the Student Recognition Banquet. 

To ensure the personal, professional and cultural growth of the members, the chapter adopted a reading list and required the members to read “Secrets to Success” by Eric Thomas, the Hip Hop Preacher.  Mr. Thomas was featured speaker for the University’s SPIT Knowledge and took the time for a special meeting with the members.  Mr. Thomas was also made an honorary member of the chapter and vowed to work with the members in the future with its programs.

The chapter’s commitment is to provide mentoring to young African Americans and other students; maintain academic excellence in the classroom and provide community service. In keeping with the goals of the 100 Black Men of Metro Houston, Inc., the chapter fervently supports the mentorship, education, economic empowerment and health and wellness awareness, programs.
