Prairie
View, Texas – October 28, 2013 – The members of the Collegiate 100 and 100
Collegiate Women will present the Power 100 Awards at its Black Tie Scholarship
Awards Gala set for November 16, 2013 in the Willie A. Tempton Student Center
Ballroom at Prairie View A&M University.
Honorees
of the award include Texas State Representatives Alma Allen and Sylvester
Turner, Professors George Brown and Kelvin Kirby and the Women’s Volley Ball
and Men’s Indoor Track Teams of Prairie View A&M University. Mrs. Allen has represented district 121 for
the past four years, while Mr. Turner has represented district 139 for the more
than fifteen years. Dr. Brown has served
as head of biology department and director pre-medicine for more twenty years,
with Dr. Kirby serving as faculty member and director for NASA sponsored
research for some fifteen years. Both the Volley Ball and Indoor Track Teams
have won the SWAC championship during the past three years.
"These
persons were selected for this honor because of their distinguished service, achievement
and commitment to excellence,” says Patrick Gray, Gala Committee Chair. “We
decided on this year’s list because of the significant impact they have made and
continue to make on the community and we pleased to honor them because they are
‘Keeping it 100™”
The
gala is a major event for the Collegiate 100 since its re-chartering at the
university in March 2011. The
organization was created at Prairie View A&M University in 1993. Proceeds from the gala will support the
organization’s mentoring programs at Arnold Middle School and Navasota
Elementary School, scholarships to students and other special programs at the
university.
Newly
inducted members will also be formally pinned and presented to the public at
the gala.
In
recent months the Collegiates have sponsored several programs to impact the
university community to include the Spring Career Expo, Breast Cancer Awareness
Ribbon distribution, Mentoring the 100 Way with the Freshmen, College Tour for
elementary through high school students and Voter Registration Drives. The organization was the recipient of the President’s
Cup for Outstanding Student Organization for 2012-13 at PVAMU.
The
Collegiate 100, an auxiliary organization of the 100 Black Men of America is
sponsored by the 100 Black Men of Metro Houston, Inc. The mission is to support
the 100 in its four for the future programs: mentoring, education, health and
wellness and economic empowerment to improve the quality of life of the
community.
