Collegiate 100 Members attend National 100 Convention


Several members of the Collegiate 100 at Prairie View A&M University attended the recent 26th Annual National Convention of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., held in Atlanta, Georgia, June 14-17.

Representing the chapter were Patrick Gray (President), Vincent Ellis (Vice President), Timothy Anderson, Kelvin Washington (Membership Director), Justin Whitaker (Treasurer) and Olatunde Idowu (Fundraising); along with Frederick V. Roberts (Chapter Advisor).

The annual conference brings together its 118 worldwide chapters, along with some 30 chapters of the Collegiate 100 and 500 young people from around the country. The primary purpose of the convention is to provide a forum for the men to share and exchange programs and ideas, report on events sponsored throughout the year, highlight the young people in the Mentoring the 100 Way Program, award scholarships and recognize the achievement and contributions of outstanding persons in the community.

This was the first conference for the members of the PVAMU Chapter and they were all ecstatic to participate in the various workshops and seminars. The gentlemen also embraced the opportunity to network with other Collegiate members and to learn about issues impacting college students throughout the country.

Other Convention Highlights were the recognition of persons who have championed rights for Black Americans over the years. Among the recipients were Attorney Harry S. Johnson (Martin Luther King Foundation), Andre Young (former UN Ambassador and Atlanta Mayor), Martin Luther King, Jr.III, Joseph Lowery (Southern Christian Leadership Conference), Ozell Sutton (former General President of Alpha Phi Alpha), Xernona Clayton (Trumpet Awards) and John H. Lewis (US Congressman) and various corporate sponsors; the salute to the youth luncheon, African American Academic Challenge and young people sharing activities from their hometown chapters.


Celebrities cited and participating in the convention included Boys 2 Men, Wayne Brady, Cheryl Lee Ralph and Midnight Starr.

The Collegiate 100 was created at Prairie View A&M University in 1993 and became a national organization in with the approval of the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc. and the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. in December 1994.The chapter was reorganized at PVAMU in March 2011.


Some significant facts: the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., mentors and educate more than 125,000 boys and girls annually, donates some $32 Million in scholarships and sponsors about 48 Collegiate 100 Chapters.  Mr. Curley M. Dossman, Jr. is the new president and chairman of the board which runs through 2014. Attorney Albert Dotson is the immediate past president and chairman of the board.Mr. Dotson was honored with a leadership and service plaque.

Dr. Clement Glenn, profess of educational leadership at PVAMU is the primary advisor the Collegiate 100.
