Collegiate 100 to Professors and PVAMU Sports Teams at 2016 Black Tie Scholarship Gala

The members of the Collegiate 100 of Prairie View A&M University will present the Power 100 Awards at its Black Tie Scholarship Awards Gala on November 12, 2016 in the Willie A. Tempton Student Center Ballroom at university at 6:30 p.m.

The 2016 Honorees include Dr. Pamela Obiomon, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and the Women's Softball Team of Prairie View A&M University. We will also pin and present the new members as we celebrate the 22nd anniversary of the organization.

"These persons were selected for this honor because of their achievement and commitment to excellence,” says Patrick Gray, former president of Collegiate 100. “When we decided to host this event we thought about the impact these persons have made on the community these past years and thought it befitting to honor them for Keeping it 100®”  The event is in its 5th year and still is the only student sponsored event of its kind.

The gala is a major event for the Collegiate 100 which was re-chartered at the university in March 2011.  The organization was created at Prairie View A&M University in 1993 and became a national organization with approval and sponsorship of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. and the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc. in 1994.  Funds raised from the event will support the chapter’s mentoring programs, scholarships to students and other special programs.

Past Power 100 Award recipients are State Representatives Alma Allen, Sylvester Turner (now Mayor of Houston) and Senfronia Thompson, Mayors Frank D. Jackson and Michael Wolfe, Professors George Brown and Kelvin Kirby and the PVAMU Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women's Track, Womens Soccer and Bowling teams.

Current and past programs that have impacted the university community include the Career Expo, held prior to the University Career Festival, Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon distribution, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Mentoring the 100 Way with the Freshmen, Mentoring at Arnold Middle and Navasota Elementary Schools, College Tour for elementary through high school students and Voter Registration Drives.

Collegiate 100 Selects Power 100 Award Honorees

The countdown is on for the 2015 Black Tie Scholarship and Power 100 Awards Gala hosted by the Collegiate 100 on November 14, in the Willie A. Tempton Student Center Ballroom at 6:30 p.m. on the campus of Prairie View A&M University.

PVAMU Medical Academy, Dr. Freddie Frazier-Professor of Mathematics, Dr. Felecia Nave-Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, the 2015 HCASC Championship Team and the 2015 Women’s Track and Field Team with Coaches. Collegiate 100 to Honor Legislator, Businessmen and PVAMU Sports Teams at 2014 Black Tie Gala

The 2014 Honorees are Mr. Khambrel Marshall, TV Anchor for KPRC, Mr. Roy Perry, Chairman of the Prairie View A&M Foundation, The Honorable, Senfronia Thompson, Texas State Representative, and the Baseball and Women Soccer Teams of Prairie View A&M University. Collegiate 100 Presents Power 100 Awards

The members of the Collegiate 100 and 100 Collegiate Women presented its Power 100 Awards in style at the Black Tie Scholarship Awards Gala on November 16, 2013 in the Willie A. Tempton Student Center Ballroom at Prairie View A&M University. KPVU's Maurice Perkins (DJ MoPhat) served as host for the gala affair, themed "Knowing the Value of US!"

Honorees of the award included Texas State Representatives Alma Allen and Sylvester Turner, Professors George Brown and Kelvin Kirby and the Women’s Volley Ball and Men’s Indoor Track Teams of Prairie View A&M University.  Mrs. Allen has represented district 121 for the past four years, while Mr. Turner has represented district 139 for the more than fifteen years.  Dr. Brown has served as head of biology department and director pre-medicine for more twenty years, with Dr. Kirby serving as faculty member and director for NASA sponsored research for some fifteen years. Both the Volley Ball and Indoor Track Teams have won the SWAC championship during the past three years.

In recent months the Collegiates have sponsored several programs to impact the university community to include the University's Career Festival, Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon distribution, Mentoring the 100 Way with the Freshmen, College Tour for elementary through high school students Boy's to Men mentoring at Arnold Middle School and Voter Registration Drives.  The organization was the recipient of the President’s Cup for Outstanding Student Organization for 2012-13 at PVAMU.

Collegiate 100 Welcomes New Members at Prairie View A&M University

The Collegiate 100 at Prairie View A&M University welcomed forty-eight new members into the fold on November 11 in a special induction ceremony held in the Johnson Phillips All Faith Chapel on the campus.  This year’s ceremony was combined with the 100 Collegiate Women of America to maximize participation and closer relationship among the men and women.

The new members who come from varied backgrounds, cultures and experiences, representing a cross section of the students at the university are:

The Collegiate 100 was founded in 1993 by Frederick V. Roberts Esquire, then Director of Student Activities at Prairie View A&M University. Upon acceptance by the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc. and approval by the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., and the Collegiate 100 became an international organization for college men.  Following a few year hiatus, the Collegiate 100 was rechartered on March 10, 2011 with the induction of 22 members on April 18.

This past year, some of the chapter's activities include participation in the Mentoring the 100 Way project of the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc. twice a month, where members work with 30 kids (8-12th graders), providing information on college life and tutoring Math and Science. The chapter also participated in the In-School Mentoring Program at CyFair’s Arnold Middle School, where they provide pep talks on college and life in general. The Arnold mentees also participated in their first college tour to Prairie View A&M University. Other activities was the continued work with the established Boys2Men Mentoring of freshmen male through various seminars with the men and women residents and supported by the residence halls; seminars on Breast Cancer Awareness with distribution of literature and pink ribbons; and Relay for Life with American Cancer Society. The chapter also teamed up with Highland Heights Elementary in Acres Home for the HISD Real Men Read Program, where the members read to the students once a month.

The Chapter hosted its first Black Tie Scholarship and Power 100 Awards Gala honoring the  SWAC Championship Women’s Basketball and Bowling Teams, Mayors Frank D. Jackson and Michael Wolfe and several students in 2012. The next gala is set for November 16, 2013 at the university to honor and recognize the Texas State Representatives Alma Allen and Sylvester Turner, Dr. George Brown, Dr. Kelvin Kirby and members of the Prairie View A&M University Championship Women’s Volley Ball and the Track Teams.  

Plans are underway to host the 2014 Male Youth Summit in February, the National Black Male Leadership Summit in April, along with the 2014 Mr. Collegiate African American Scholarship Pageant.

Jonathan Amos a senior accounting student is the president for the Collegiate 100 and Charnabria Leonard as senior biology student is the president of the 100 Collegiate Women of America. The chapter advisers are Mrs. Shadia Washington, Dr. Clement Glenn and Frederick V. Robert Esquire.

Amos Takes Helm of Collegiate 100 PVAMU

Jonathan Amos, a senior accounting major at Prairie View A &M University is the new president of the Collegiate 100. Originally elected vice president, Amos ascended to the position with the resignation of Patrick Gray who served as president for 2012-13.  Amos previously served as Treasurer for 2012-13.

To enhance his professional development, Jonathan completed two internships, the first with Spectra Energy Inc., Houston in Summer 2012 and Deloitte & Touche LLP. Houston in Summer 2013. Both internships provided opportunities for him to network and develop his professional and technical skills for his future career as a CPA. 

He also competed in the KPMG Case Study Competition sponsored by J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. with in Phoenix, Arizona in the summer of 2012. He is most proud of the competition because it gave him a chance to present a detailed perspective on diversity of J.P Morgan Chase Board of Directors to the judges.

Jonathan’s membership include, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. (Fundraising and Finance Committee Chair), Accounting Career Awareness Program (Counselor), National Association of Black Accountants (NABA-President), Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society (Vice President), and Volunteers of America. He also is a member of the Intramural Basketball Team and American Cancer Society Relay for Life team.  Amidst his busy schedule, Jonathan finds time to participate in the Collegiate’s mentoring program at Arnold Middle School in Cypress and the Mentoring the 100 Way for the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc.

Some of his awards and recognition include, participant in the Wake Forest Diversity Accounting Consortium, United Ministers Scholarship, J.E.L. Emerging Leaders Scholarship, National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) Regional Scholarship, the University’s Dean’s List and President’s Honor Roll and a participant in the College of Business’s Cultural Exchange Trip to South Korea.

Strong organizational and leadership skills; able to work effectively and efficiently while handling multiple tasks in a high pressure environment.

Upon receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in May 2014 he plans to become a CPA and to become a Partner for Deloitte and Touché. 

The Collegiate 100 is comprised of students on college and university campuses across America who shares common goals with the sponsoring 100 Black Men of America Chapter. Collegiate 100 members are committed to volunteerism and improving the community through mentoring and being positive role models for the youth, particularly young African Americans.   The Collegiate 100 was created at Prairie View A&M University in 1993 and became a national organization of the 100 Black Men, Inc., in 1994. The chapter was re-chartered at the University in March 2011.
